Letterform Design Project

What is a letterform design?

A letterform design is a term used especially in typography, paleography, calligraphy and epigraphy to mean a letter's shape. "Letterform" is a synonym for glyph, which is a specific, concrete way of writing an abstract character or grapheme.

What was your job as the designer?

My job as the designer was to create unique and interesting letterform designs for the topics we were given. It was my job to create original designs that intrigue the viewer.

What were some of the challenges you faced during this project?

Some of the challenges I faced during this project would be coming up with designs that were different from the other students designs. For example, stampede was my most difficult box (and in my opinion, my weakest) because everybody has the same view of a stampede. For this box, I think my design was not as unique as it could have been. My other challenge was coming up with fonts that would match and not look drastically different from each other.

Do you feel you successfully completed the project? Why or why not?

I feel that I did successfully complete this project. I am happy and confident about the majority of my designs and believe that most of them are different from the rest of the class.

If you can change something about the project what would it be and why?

One thing I would change about this project would be the topics. I would have given a variation of different topics for the boxes and have the students choose which nine of them they wanted to do. I think this would lead to more creativity because when the students are working they wouldn't see similar designs around them.
